The Lincoln Memorial

The Lincoln Memorial was built to resemble a Greek temple. It has 36 Doric columns, one for each state at the time of Lincoln’s death.

On the south wall of the memorial is the Gettysburg Address, and a sculpture by Daniel Chester French of a seated Lincoln is in the center of the memorial chamber.

Facts about the memorial:

  • Exterior height of columns: 44 ft.
  • Exterior diameter of columns: 7 ft. 5 in. at base
  • Height of building: 99 ft. above grade, 80 ft. above foundation
  • Interior central chamber: 60 by 74 ft.
  • Interior walls and columns: Indiana limestone
  • Height of interior columns: 50 ft.
  • Diameter of interior columns: 5 ft. 6 in.
